Never have two women had the ability to distract more drivers, than when Amber and Angela Cope set foot on the speedway. These blonde bombshells may look like they belong on the runway rather than the racetrack; however, they are more than just a set of pretty faces: they are a force to be reckoned with behind the wheel. The American auto racers made history this year when they become the first twins to ever race in the NASCAR Nationwide Series on May 22 in Newton, Iowa. The niec-es of Daytona 500 winner, Derrike Cope, are already well on their way to achieving their ultimate goal of be-coming one of the best drivers in NASCAR. HerHighway’s Editor in Chief Christina Selter interviewed the Cope twins right after their photo shoot for a RACY Maxim spread. You can see the full set of photos from the March 2012 issue of Maxim.
Who have you mentored who did someone mentor you in this industry to help you get started?
Our dad is the one who got us started in racing. We started racing go-karts at the age of nine traveling all over the Northwest winning championships and it all transpired from there. As we continued racing our mentor became or uncle Derrike, we always said we wanted to be just like him and one day race alongside him! Wow, have we accomplished a lot this year!
As a woman what features are your favorites in a car?
As two hot twin race car drivers our favorite features in our race cars are, the window because we love climbing through that thing it makes us feel inferior, the stick shift because we love roaring through those gears, and the power because who doesn’t love something powerful and fast underneath them!!
Why does the auto industry seem like a difficult environment for females?
Five years ago we would say it was very difficult to break into the auto industry, but now it’s more inviting then it’s ever been NASCAR needs females in the sport and not just Danica! We need females battling it out! THE TWINS AGAINST DANICA!!!
Why did you want to work in the auto industry?
The auto industry is something that always intrigued the two of us since we were little girls, instead of sandboxes we would be playing in oil..
First automotive job?
Our first automotive job was when we were six years old and we would be running through our dads engine shop “Cope Brothers Machine Shop” I think that’s when our love for racing first started!
Proudest professional achievement?
Our proudest achievement or greatest victory so far in our careers would be when we both made our debut in Martinsville in The Camping World Truck series, that is when our big dream of ours became a reality!
Current challenge at work?
Current challenge at work is looking the way we do and being taken seriously, that’s been our biggest obstacle. Its finding people or a brand that like who we are and believe in us, we will not change for anyone! We believe in what we do and who we are, we hope we inspire women of all ages.
Our Dream job is both of us racing full time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series taking turns in Victory Lane.
What you do to relax?
