Madelyn-Miller HerHighway

Madelyn Miller Automotive Journalist>

Madelyn Miller is a food, wine and travel writer who contributes to 12 Publications with a combined circulation of several million.

She was dubbed “THE TRAVEL LADY” at KDFW-TV, the Dallas Fox Station, where she frequently gives travel tips and advice. She was so well known, that she decided to use that name when she founded Travel Lady website, which now has over 200 contributors on six continents

When on the ground, Madelyn enjoys test driving new cars, and she owns Car Lady News website.

“I started my first website Travel Lady in 1994. The name came from a handle they used when I did segments on Fox TV. And then I had website fever. It is such a great way to get the word out instantly. I would like to thank all the people and companies who were bought out,  went bankrupt or fired me. Without all that, I wouldn’t have the wonderful life I lead today.” Stated Madelyn.

How excited or why are your participating with HerHighway Drive Breast Cancer Awareness?
One of my very best friends, Emmy award winning journalist Rochelle Brown, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.  I asked what I could do to help. She responded with,  “when was your last mammogram?”

I checked. It was seven years ago.  I moved and had not gotten my “reminder post card.” My doctor had retired. My phone number had changed. And I went along with my busy life never thinking about a mammogram.

I made an appointment and luckily my mammogram was normal. But even as she has recovered,  Rochelle still asks women, “When was your last mammogram?” That has become a mantra that repeats in my mind, knowing I will never again forget.

As a woman what features are your favorites in a car?
I am a princess. I don’t want to feel the road or drive very fast.

I like luxury and pampering. I care about comfortable seats that accommodate me even though I am short. And I want a car that is easy to get in and out of in a tight or short skirt.

I love features like keyless ignition, and the lift- assist in the Ford Escape. And the park assist in the Scion and Ford Flex.

When I get into a car, the first things I look at are trunk space and a place for my purse. Trunk space needs to be useable trunk space. Space that is easy to reach and use (and ideally has something to make it open without pushing anything more than a key fob. The Chevy Silverado has the best purse space. I like to have a co-pilot like OnStar and the Lexus Enform system.

What is your proudest social media achievement?
I was featured as on the first female-focused website owners in an article that ran in numerous syndicated newspapers. I have over 200 contributors for  my websites and I got clippings and reports on sittings of the article from as far away as Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It ran in the Detroit Free Press the week of the Detroit Auto Show.

What is your current challenge at work?
Being in two places at once. I almost get too many invitations to do too many wonderful things.
What is your top advise to other women for social media?

I started with Facebook after a trip to the wine country. A winery I had visited proudly sent out a release about an app they developed for Facebook.  I didn’t even I know what facebook was. But I did know that  I had to learn more about facebook to keep up. I jumped right in and within less than a year, I had too many facebook friends. (they limit you to 5,000 “friends” and” likes”) and I can’t invite any more contacts to LinkedIn, either. My mother said you can never have too many friends, but contemporary wisdom does not hold that same value.

I think Klout is very important. It has an algorithm that computes how much visibility and influence you have. I have found many manufacturers and companies are very interested in Klout scores.

Dream job?
My life. I own ten websites and get opportunities to experience and learn about things in multiple industries—travel, automotive, yoga, chocolate, tea, coffee, cocktails and more.

What you do to relax?
Yoga. When  I am in town I am a regular at the relaxation yoga at Tsada Yoga studio. I even try to take yoga classes when I travel.  Massages are another favorite way to relax.

Who have you mentored, or/and did someone mentor you in social media to help you get started?
When I first joined Texas Automotive Writers there were very few women. I helped several women join—including Renta Curtis,  Kittie Beletic and Rochelle Brown. I started a facebook page–  TAWA Chicks because women were almost invisible in TAWA.
