I’ll never forget the first time I saw the super sexy Porsche Panamera lurking about on the open road. “OMG(oh my gosh)…I thought to myself.” It looked like a beautiful Carrera model…bulked up on steroids with a longer, fuller nose and four full sized doors! For me, it was love at first site, as I immediately fantasized about driving a family car with the performance, prestige and unparalleled panache worthy of wearing the Porsche moniker.
On a recent invitation-only media event The Allison Inn and Spa in Oregon, I lovingly spent time in the cockpit of the complete line-up of 2014 Panamera trim levels, but it was the “Executive” and new, first-ever Panamera plug-in “S E-Hybrid” that made the greatest impressions. The bold, black Executive Bi-Turbo was simply stunning in both looks and performance. But that’s somewhat to be expected as the MSRP of the example we tested topped out at about $221k — and had just about every available luxury, safety and convenience option on board.
The Panamera Executive is a marvel of automotive engineering and masterful metallurgy. The car’s 3.0-liter V6 twin turbo with Direct Fuel Injection puts 420 horsepower — and a whopping 384 pound-feet of torque — at the whim of your right foot in this gorgeous rear-wheel-drive beast. Acceleration was smooth and swift, and the aluminum double wishbone front axle and multi-link aluminum rear axle worked in symphony to achieve a cornering effect that brings to mind those proverbial “rails.” Thankfully, the Panamera Executive’s high-performance braking components were on par with the car’s propensity for speed. Trust me, I went from very fast…to a dead stop on a more than one short runway.
Contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of women out there — motor head geeks like me — who actually appreciate state of the art automotive advancements. So I would be remiss if I didn’t sprinkle in a few of the Panamera Turbo Executive’s more exotic options. There’s an available Carbon Fiber Multifunction Steering Wheel, Adaptive Air Suspension, Lane Departure Warning, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), optional Sport Chrono Package, and a Voice Control System that allows you to tell your Panamera what you want it to do.
The mind-boggling array of available options and technical specifications are way too extensive to cover in this cursory review. So I urge you to fasten your seatbelt and zoom over to Porsche’s online showroom to fully explore the Panamera Executive an its infinite nuances. While you’re there, do not pass the opportunity to investigate its amazing, fuel friendly sister — the game-changing new Panamera S E-Hybrid plug-in! It’s one of the only sport sedans on Earth that provides the dual satisfaction of burning up the road…while doing your part to save the Planet. That’s another feat may come to realize is “purely Porsche.”
